The meteorite from this batch is a complete slice of one of the latest worldwide classifications of RUMURUTI chondrite meteorites (stony meteorite) found in the Sahara Desert, officially named GRIZIM. R-type meteorites are named after the first specimen of this type observed falling in the village of Rumuruti (Kenya) in 1934. They form a rare group of chondrites, which, although sharing many features with ordinary chondrites such as similar chondrules, few refractory inclusions, or similar chemical composition, differ in that they have a higher proportion of fine-grained matrix, clasts of various lithologies from the parent body, and contain little iron in the form of metallic particles; almost all the metal they contain is oxidized or present as sulfides.
Chondrites contain the oldest materials we can find in the solar system, with an estimated age of more than 4.550 billion years.
