Description from the seller
Elaborate Venetian landscape attributed to the school of Giuseppe Zais. Oil on canvas. 18th century.
Giuseppe Zais (1709 -1781) was a Venetian painter, a high exponent of the Rococo period, master of vedutism.
Born into a family of modest means, Zais studied first in Treviso with Francesco Simonini, then in Venice with Francesco Zuccarelli and Francesco Simonini. From Canaletto, he assimilated the realistic rendering of rural and lagoon landscapes, as well as villages and cities.
Highly appreciated by his contemporaries, he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.
His copious production of paintings and watercolors is characterized by attention to detail, a serene atmosphere and a bright palette.
Zais is considered one of the most important Italian landscape painters of the 18th century. His stylistic signature had a significant influence on the evolution of landscape painting, both in Italy and Europe.
The luminous painting presented here presents an Arcadian landscape in eighteenth-century style, attributable to the school of Giuseppe Zais, where nature is the protagonist and man harmoniously integrates. The composition is balanced: on the left, trees frame the scene, while on the right, a rocky cliff draws the gaze deeper into the landscape. The clear sky, rendered with blue veils and touches of white, imparts a sense of airy spaciousness. The figures, small and gracefully arranged along the path, enliven the scene with everyday gestures, striking a balance between pastoral elegance and realism. The warm, diffused light gently shapes the vegetation, creating delicate contrasts and a serene atmosphere. The brushstrokes, cursive and attentive to naturalistic detail, reflect the influence of Ricci and Zuccarelli, while the luminous rendering and idyllic narrative evoke eighteenth-century Venetian poetry, which aimed to celebrate the peaceful beauty of the countryside.
The craquelure brings great charm to the composition.
The painting comes from an Italian residence and was recently relined and re-stretched, according to the rules of the art, at the same time as the canvas was cleaned.
The work comes with a complimentary patinated gold frame.
Measurements: 41 cm x 35 cm.
