Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Pair of gilded Empire porcelain vases, each about 30.4 cm high, 19 cm wide and 12 cm deep, with swan-handles and a square base, France, circa 1815, in good used condition with minor signs of age; front features hand-painted biblical scenes, one vase damaged and reassembled with clear damage but not affecting the hand-painted decoration, total weight over 5 kg.
Description from the seller
Beautiful set of two richly gilded porcelain vases, executed in Empire style.
Both vases are decorated with swans with spread wings as handles, a distinctive motif from the early 19th century.
France around 1815
The front of each vase is carefully hand-painted with religious scenes.
Possibly John the Baptist - A young holy figure with a staff in a wooded landscape.
This is a classic motif: Johannes is almost always depicted in a rough camelhair coat, with a staff (sometimes cross-shaped) and a lamb — referring to his statement 'Behold the Lamb of God.'
Maria with the Lamb (Virgin Mary as the Good Shepherd) - A woman with a halo, accompanied by a lamb.
or possibly Saint Agnes, who is traditionally depicted with a lamb as a symbol of her purity and martyrdom.
The difference often lies in the context.
• When the lamb is presented to her or stands close to her, it is usually Saint Agnes.
If the scene has a more maternal or pastoral appearance, it could be Maria.
Given the serene posture and the pairing with John the Baptist on the other vase, it is quite possible that the couple represents Mary and John the Baptist — a thematically related duo often found in religious art.
The paintings are framed by a richly gilded background with a high gloss.
The back sides are evenly gilded. Both vases stand on a square base.
In good used condition, the vase with Johannes has been broken and reassembled. There is clear damage; please carefully review the photos for an accurate impression. This does not detract from the hand painting.
Dame is in very good condition with light signs of age and use; minimal wear marks on the gold. No visible cracks or restorations. It sits loosely.
Dimensions (approximately):
Approximately 30.4 cm H
Approximately 19cm B
Approximately 12cm D
A remarkable and decorative pair – a showpiece in any classic interior or antique porcelain collection.
Weight: 5kg+/-
Word well packed and sent via registered mail.
