Description from the seller
高須白雲 Takasu Hakuun (b1900)
Born in Isshiki Village, Hazu County in 1900. Also known as Hakugyoku-白玉 and Koshinsoudou-耕心艸堂. Studied under Yamamoto Baisho and later under Mizuta Chikuho in Kyoto. Active as a member of the Japan Nanga Academy.
with signature 'Hakuun Seijin' 白雲正人 and seal 'Hakuun' 白雲 'Seijin' 正人
This graceful hanging scroll by Takasu Hakuun depicts a tranquil landscape rendered in the luminous blue-and-green palette associated with the Nanga tradition. Tall, rounded mountains rise softly into the mist, their slopes scattered with blossoming plum trees that signal the quiet arrival of early spring. At the foot of the valley, a small thatched hut sits peacefully among the flowering branches, while a solitary scholar walks a winding path beside a stream, suggesting a poetic journey into nature and contemplation. Hakuun’s delicate brushwork and harmonious colors reflect his training under Yamamoto Baisho and Mizuta Chikuho in Kyoto, as well as his long activity with the Japan Nanga Academy. The composition carries both refinement and serenity, embodying the classical literati spirit that valued simplicity, natural beauty, and introspection. The scroll is signed “Hakuun Seijin” and sealed “Hakuun” and “Seijin.” It comes with its wooden storage box. A gentle and atmospheric landscape work that conveys the poetic charm of traditional Japanese Nanga painting.
