Description from the seller
Nicolas de Staël, the embarkation at Barbate
Michel Suret-Canale, 2025
Oil on canvas 55 × 75 cm
Signed, titled, and dated on the back. Handwritten certificate of authenticity on the canvas.
Original painting created with a palette knife, part of a series dedicated to a biographical fiction about Nicolas de Staël, imagined during a stay on the Andalusian coast before his departure for North Africa. The artist transposes a personal experience in Barbate, at the port, where he stayed for several days, and features a tiny, recurring figure – 'Staël on a bicycle' – within a landscape built with blocks of color.
The composition simultaneously evokes containers, maritime facades, and free blocks of color, as if the environment anticipated the upcoming painting. The thick material, the altered grays, and the accents of yellow, pink, and orange dialogue with Staël's memory without imitation, in a contemporary style.
This work belongs to a series started in 2024, the first version of which was acquired by a collector. It constitutes a unique piece, both an artist's narrative and a pictorial exercise around color and the memory of a real place.
Sold without reserve price. Professional packaging.
