Remarkable luxury edition of 'The Lady of the Camellias' by Alexandre Dumas fils, illustrated by Albert Lynch, with a magnificent colored cover (preserved), engraved in etching by Gaujean (repeated composition on the frontispiece), featuring 10 outside-text etchings engraved by Massé or Champollion, and 31 engraved headers in various tones.
Work produced by the house Quantin, published in the 'Calmann-Lévy' collection, one of the copies printed on vellum in a limited number, unbound (Talvart, V, p. 67).
Opens with the preface by Jules Janin, followed by a new unpublished preface by the author.
Good quality binding in dark blue half-morocco with corner tips, ornately decorated spine with gilt title and author - rubbing on the spine and corners (upper corners pierced). Interior in very good condition, two plates with light foxing. Beautiful untrimmed copy.
Albert Lynch was a Peruvian-born painter (1851-1912). He settled in Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and received awards in 1890 and 1892. He was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. His preferred theme was the woman of his time.
Novel by Alexandre Dumas fils published in 1848, inspired by his love for the courtesan Marie Duplessis.
The work inspired Verdi's opera, La Traviata. Many actresses have portrayed the character, from Sarah Bernhardt to Isabelle Adjani and Isabelle Huppert, including Lillian Gish and Greta Garbo.
