Clair de Lune, illustrated by Guy de Maupassant with artists Grasset, Rochegrosse, Arcos and Le Natur, is a first French edition from 1884, comprising 117 pages in a softcover with illustrated binding and in reasonably good condition.
Description from the seller
First illustrated edition, published in the same year as the original edition. The collection contains 12 short stories, each illustrated with a wood engraving at the header by a different artist: Gambard, Jeanniot, Merwart, Le Natur, Adrien Marie, Myrbach, J. Roy, Grasset, Arcos, Renouard, Tirado, Rochegrosse, in addition to a frontispiece and the illustration on the front cover.
Most of these news articles were published in newspapers in 1882 and 1883.
Each of these short stories, even though some are less evocative than others, benefits from Maupassant's incredible talent to instantly immerse his readers in a specific atmosphere, to encounter characters with whom one would almost feel they have known or heard of before. The descriptions are masterful, the style incisive, and the themes varied.
Paperback, illustrated cover.
Condition: fragile volume (spine split). Soiled cover. Yellowed paper, without foxing. Untrimmed. Reasonable condition.
