Description from the seller
Superb luxury edition of 'Centaure' and 'La Bacchante' by Maurice de Guérin (1810-1839), with the original edition preface by Charles Maurras.
Decorated by the artist painter and decorator Adolphe Giraldon (1855-1933), with beautiful wood engravings in three colors by Mme Rita Dreyfus (including 3 vignettes in banners, 3 tailpieces, and 2 off-text vignettes).
Limited edition of 351 copies. This one, among the 275 on Arches paper, numbered from 1 to 275, bears No. 154.
Pages under a pastedown cover illustrated with a medallion on a gold background. Brown cardboard case and slipcase.
In very good condition. Creased cover. Case split at the ends and worn, dust jacket rubbed at the edges. Interior fresh and clean, in excellent condition. A fine copy.
Coming from an old Languedocian family, noble but not wealthy, Maurice de Guérin (1810-1839) was born near Gaillac, at the Château du Cayla, where he spent his childhood. 'Le Centaure' is a true ancient poem, of learned naturalism, which led to its author being accused of pantheism. 'La Bacchante', another ancient fragment, springs from the same source of inspiration.
