Location: Chaco, Grand Chaco Gualamba, Argentina
Fund year: 1576 (year of the discovery of the meteorite field)
Classification: Coarse octahedrite of group IAB.
Composition: 92.6% iron, 6.68% nickel, 0.43% cobalt, 0.25% phosphorus, 87 ppm gallium, 407 ppm germanium, and 3.6 ppm iridium.
Parts of the Campo del Cielo meteorite, an iron meteorite, were first discovered in 1576 in present-day Argentina. A Spanish governor heard reports from indigenous Indians that iron had fallen from the sky. He then sent an expedition that brought back several fragments. The site, a water-scarce plain, was aptly named Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky).
