Description from the seller
Portrait of a young person with a hat and fur collar • Oil on canvas • 51×40 cm • Signed and dated 'Lenbach – 1882' on the back • Original late 19th-century wooden frame with tension wedges • Pencil inscription on the frame 'Folco G.B. 1939' • Paper label with Latin motto from Lucretius, flame with letters C O N S H, and handwritten correct caption 'ex picturis Folco I.B.' • Provenance: Folco I.B. collection, Italy, 1939 • Hampel auction house.
An opera belonging to the 19th-century German realist portraiture movement.
The painting depicts a young man with a dark hat and a wide cloak with a fur collar. The sober composition and warm light give the face a psychological intensity of rare finesse, in keeping with a typically Central European tradition.
Franz von Lenbach's painting activity is part of 19th-century German portrait Realism, characterized by a deep exploration of the subject's identity and inner presence. Due to its quality of execution and compositional approach, the work is situated within the production of the Bavarian master of the 1880s, a period during which Lenbach utilized an active studio of collaborators who produced replicas and variations of his famous portraits. For this reason, in the absence of direct documentation, the attribution is prudently made by the Hampel auction house (see attachment) as 'attributed to Franz von Lenbach.'
The signature and date 'Lenbach – 1882' on the back still confirm a direct reference to the artist and his school. The back of the work also contains elements of notable collectible interest: inscription 'Folco G.B. 1939' on the frame and a paper cartouche with a motto taken from Lucretius, De rerum natura, symbol of the flame with letters C O N S H and a pencil correction 'ex picturis Folco I.B.', a distinctive mark of the Folco I.B. collection, also documented on other works that have gone to auction.
Franz von Lenbach was born in Schrobenhausen in 1836 and became one of the most important portrait painters of late 19th-century Europe, known for his famous depictions of Otto von Bismarck, Hans Makart, and other leading figures of Central European culture. He died in Munich in 1904.
