Brass is a yellow, highly ductile, and malleable alloy primarily composed of copper and zinc in varying proportions, and its direct production from suitable ores was mastered by metallurgists even before antiquity. In the 1st century BC, brass was used as a means of payment in various regions of Asia Minor. Later, it was used throughout Asia and Europe, especially in the Roman Empire with the creation of the sestertius from brass. Some pieces have been found in Europe, such as the wild boar shield from Soulac-sur-Mer, a Gallic artifact from the 1st century BC. In Europe, it has been used for a variety of purposes since the Middle Ages.
