Description from the seller
Main features of the work
Anselmo Bucci (1887–1955) • 'The Tricolour on the Sea of Muggia' • Pencil and watercolor on diary page • 27×21 cm, 45×39 cm with frame • Front/back work • Provenance: private Italian collection • Work belonging to the Italian Twentieth Century movement.
This extremely rare work of great historical value was exhibited at the show 'Anselmo Bucci. Gente di mare. Graphic and verbal sketches' held in 2010 at the Casa Museo–Quadreria Cesarini in Fossombrone. Curated by the leading scholars of the artist — Giancarlo Gori, Silvia Cuppini, and Francesco Rossi — the exhibition provided an in-depth and unprecedented insight into Bucci's graphic and documentary work.
In particular, the exhibition featured two original notebooks by the artist, dating from 1930 and 1933, which reveal lesser-known aspects of his work. Not everyone knows that, in the 1930s, Anselmo Bucci was involved as an interior designer in the reconversion of the interiors of the ships California, Timavo (both mentioned on the back of the artwork), and Duchessa d’Aosta.
The work presented, titled 'The Tricolour on Muggia's Sea,' dates back to April 30, 1930, and is part of the first of two notebooks displayed in Fossombrone. The sheet, composed of front and back, is a pencil and watercolor on a diary page. It measures 27×21 cm (with frame: 45×39 cm). It is housed in a frame with double glass, allowing a complete view of both sides.
On the front, we find a delicate tempera and pencil drawing: Bucci, during a break on board, observes from the stern of the ship the promontory of Muggia, a location overlooking the port of Trieste. In the foreground, the mast with the tricolor flag stands out, symbolizing homeland and identity. The image is rich in symbolic and patriotic value, in line with the poetics of the Novecento Italiano movement, to which the artist adhered under the influence of Margherita Sarfatti.
The back of the sheet, however, holds documentary value: it is a technical reminder — notes on costs, materials, and activities — signed by a supplier as a receipt, almost to emphasize the intertwining of artistic passion and everyday work, between the pleasurable and the useful.
Museal work of historical, cultural, and artistic importance is intended for a cultured and refined collector, passionate about Italian art of the early twentieth century.
Anselmo Bucci was born in Fossombrone in 1887 and died in Monza in 1955. Painter, engraver, and writer, he was among the founders of the Gruppo dei Sette along with Sironi, Funi, Dudreville, Malerba, Marussig, and Oppi. A prominent figure of Italian Twentieth Century art, he worked between Milan and Paris, distinguished by a poetic and disciplined painting style. His works, now housed in major Italian museums, are highly valued by collectors for their historical and stylistic significance.
