【Product details】
This Showa period bamboo brush holder is a form of yatate, the traditional Japanese portable writing set. It is decorated with finely detailed motifs including pinks, chrysanthemum, and bellflower, together with a brass inlay of a fighting cock. Each of these designs carries symbolic meaning in Japanese culture. Pinks represents grace, elegance, and feminine beauty, the chrysanthemum is the imperial flower of Japan and symbolises longevity, rejuvenation, and the season of autumn, while the bellflower is associated with unchanging love, honesty, and resilience.
The bamboo case functions as a brush holder, and opening the resin cap reveals a brush stored inside. Attached to the cord is a netsuke-style bamboo container with a bellflower motif on its side, fitted with a hinged lid that opens to allow small objects to be stored, reflecting the traditional form of the ink container often accompanying a yatate.
Minor blemishes and traces of wear consistent with age are visible, but overall it remains in good used vintage condition. Please refer to the photographs for details.
