Artist's Biography
1935 - Born on September 7th in Barcelona, into a family of artists. His grandparents were the shoemakers of King Alfonso XIII; his mother was a famous dancer at the Royal Theatre of Madrid and the Liceu of Barcelona, and on his side of the family they were musicians, since his father was a world-renowned trumpet concert performer and very well known in Barcelona for his concerts in Jaime Planas' orchestra.
1939 - He entered the Ntra. Sra. de Montserrat School until the age of twelve where he developed his first studies of music and painting.
1947 - He entered the Municipal Conservatory of Music of Barcelona, alternating his studies with painting, exhibiting for the first time in Paris.
1951 - Continues his studies in Music and Fine Arts. At the age of 16, he gives his first piano concert with orchestra at Our Lady of Montserrat. Around this time, he begins working at 41 Via Laietana, in the administration office of the Marquises of Marianau, while also working with Mr. Cesáreo Rodriguez Aguilera in the administration office of a Moroccan company that published the famous newspaper "El Día".
1952 - He finished his music studies (piano) at the Barcelona Municipal Conservatory and returned to France, where he held an exhibition in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, invited to the home of Luis Mariano (a great music and painting enthusiast). There he painted several portraits of famous people. He then went to Paris to complete his painting studies and stayed at the home of his cousins, Madame Constanza (famous artists).
1956 - He performed his military service in Africa, being transferred to the Sahara Desert.
Villa Cisneros because of the war uprising where, despite the hardships, he formed a small orchestra and played the organ in the church. He also painted several pictures of the Sahara Desert, including two typical portraits of two Arabs from the Arules Tribe, inspired by the sea he contemplated, called "River of Gold".
1958 - For a year he worked in the Administration of the Marquises of Marianau and as a musician in several establishments in Barcelona, in the land of the Operetta "Champagne and Dancers" and the Gran Teatro Liceo, while giving painting classes, alternating with the painters De Soto, Camps and the famous character of that time Count Georges de Caroli.
1959 - He traveled throughout Spain with the painter De Soto and his brother Enrique, holding several exhibitions in Asturias, Santander, Bilbao and Zaragoza.
1960 - She travels again to Paris where she is commissioned to decorate the "Slipper" Museum of famous dancers of Madame Constance, where her French husband and principal dancer of the Paris Opera commissions her to paint several pictures of Parisian themes, later presented at the Modern Museum of Fine Arts in Paris.
1962 - Appointed Director of the Chinese Art Gallery in Bilbao on Elcano Street, where he worked with the painters Lorenzo de Solís, Párraga, Olaortua, Juanón, and Calle Alberdi. He traveled to Paris to visit Pablo Ruiz Picasso with the son of his best friend, Enrique de Soto, spending four days with Picasso and his wife, Jacqueline, and receiving a drawing from him from Madrid. For Christmas, we reciprocated by sending Jacqueline a Manila shawl. We received Christmas greetings from both Jacqueline and Picasso.
1965 - This year he prepared and sent a collection of paintings to New York for an exhibition of Basque themes. He moved to Zaragoza, setting up a painting studio on Escuelas Pías Street, which he shared with the painter Villachica, and another on Alberdi Street, where he also taught painting, taking on a student named Maturen. He held an exhibition at the Albiac Gallery in Zaragoza.
1967 - He met the painter Joan Miró and the famous painter from Vitoria, Pichot, and held an exhibition of his work at the Albiac Gallery in Zaragoza. He also exhibited in Irún, Paris, and Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
1968-1969 - Birth of his two children, who are now two young painters, "Garfell" and "Montserrat Garcíarena," the latter being the author of his portrait. He learned the art of painting restoration from Juanón, where they set up a restoration workshop in Galerías Isalo (Bilbao), carrying out some of the most important painting restorations.
1970-1974 - He exhibited in Santander; the Museo de la Cuba acquired one of his paintings. He decorated the Ballets Olaeta in Bilbao with paintings and painted the portrait of its founder, Segundo Olaeta, while continuing to restore paintings.
1976-1978 - He dedicated himself exclusively to painting landscapes and Basque-themed subjects in Gernika and Lumo. For several years, he created decorations and painted in the mountains of Lumo due to his close friendship with the Olaeta family.
1979-1991 - He restored the Etxebarri Palace. He was commissioned to paint two portraits of King Juan Carlos. He held a major exhibition at the Ayamans Palace in Palma de Mallorca. He gave an organ concert and a piano concert in Palma de Mallorca with the renowned opera singer Vicente Sardinero.
He exhibits at the Yela Gallery in Cangas de Onís, Lisbon (Portugal). He exhibits at Studio 75 Algorta (Bilbao). He exhibits in Logroño, at Gran Vía Juan Carlos I, 36. He exhibits in Paris, at 9 Rue Dronot. He restores the Etxebarri Palace again, assisted by his two children, the painters Josu and Montserrat Garciarena.
1992 - Currently preparing new works and exhibitions for Barcelona, Madrid and for the editor of "The Great Basque Encyclopedia" Martín de Retana.
