Charles Leickert (1816-1907) - Une ville la nuit

A very beautiful typical painting by Charles Leickert, where the romantic and wintry atmosphere is recognizable. He enjoys depicting snowy streets, at dusk or at night, bathed in a cold light that gives a particular tone to the scene. The buildings, tall and slightly massive, are painted with precision but without superfluous details, like a theater set framing the action. The light plays a central role: veiled sky, halo behind the roofs, a few luminous windows contrasting with the dark facades and guiding the eye. The characters remain small, dark, almost anonymous; they mainly serve to give scale and suggest everyday life.
