Hendrik Savrij
Haarlem 1822 - 1907 Haarlem
Cows in landscape.
oil on canvas 50 by 80 cm

The air has been restored.

Hendrik Savrij was a Dutch artist.

Life and work

Savrij was a son from the first marriage of the painter and manufacturer Martinus Savrij and Pietertje van Duijnen. He married Wilhelmina Cornelia Bauer on November 20, 1861, in The Hague. Three children were born from their marriage. Their son, Henri Savrij, like his father and grandfather, became an artist.

Savrij was trained as an artist at the city drawing academy of Haarlem. His sister, Cornelia Johanna, was also an artist. Like his brother-in-law, Willem Frederik Weidner, he was taught by his father. After his education, he dedicated himself to painting portraits and especially landscapes. He is known for his paintings of polder landscapes with cattle. He was a member of the artists' association Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and secretary of Kunst Zij Ons Doel in Haarlem. His work was exhibited several times outside the Netherlands, for example in Brussels and Philadelphia.

Work by Savrij can be found in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Westfries Museum in Hoorn, and in the collection of the Institute of Collections Netherlands.
