Paris-Diamant. Nouvelle édition, with 20 plans and an appendix on the Exposition universelle de 1889, by Joanne (Paul).
Description from the seller
Joanne (Paul).
Paris-Diamant. New edition, with 20 plans and an appendix on the 1889 Universal Exposition containing 3 plans.
Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1889.
In-18 (approx. 15 x 10 cm). Publisher's full green percale binding, with blind-stamped decoration, gold titles. Top edge stained (original).
- Half-title, title, 1 volume, paginated text.
Numerous in-text plans, including architectural plans (Madeleine, Louvre...).
- Complete brochures, including:
Overall plan of the 1889 Universal Exposition (colors)
Map of the Champ-de-Mars (large brochure, colorful)
Louvre Museums Map (bistre brochure)
- Original small cardboard compartment at the end of the volume, with the fold-out map of Paris still present.
Beautiful edition published on the occasion of the 1889 World's Fair, that of the Eiffel Tower and the great Parisian tourist boom.
The Guides-Joanne, direct ancestors of the Guides Bleus, are then the absolute references: reliable texts, remarkable topographical precision, and iconography of great readability — here perfectly represented.
This 'Diamond' edition, a luxurious pocket format, is sought after for its color plans and its analytical appendix on the Exhibition, written by Dr. V. du Claux. The book offers a very precise snapshot of Paris at the moment the city is transitioning into modernity.
Very well preserved binding: slightly rubbed corners, fresh percale, neat gilding.
Clean interior, sound paper, very good condition of the leaflets.
Interior case preserved, with a small lateral slit (normal but to be noted).
Complete set of plans, with the two large color schemes of the exposition: these are what determine the value. A very good example of work and collection, typical of the emerging tourism at the end of the 19th century.
