A remarkable work by Samuel Manning. The charming illustrations are wood-engravings and photoxylographs (wood engravings from photographs); the original pen-and-pencil drawings are reproduced here in Gillotage, a method of printing from etched metal relief block. They are all of high quality, contributing greatly to the charm of this classic.
This handsome copy is profusely illustrated with tissue-guarded frontispiece, and over 130 engravings, many of which are full-page plates printed on side one of the leaf only. Published by The Religious Tract Society, London, 1887. Publishers’ original brown cloth boards with elaborate Victorian gilt lettering and design on front cover and spine. Front board highly decorated with designs of Pharaoh, walled city, young boy and two figures poling a raft in gold. Blind stamp decoration to rear board. All page edges gilt. Decorated endpapers.

Condition
The book is beautifully bound, designed and illustrated. External covers are clean and in nice shape, with light wear to corners, and spine ends. Internally the book is in lovely condition. Old inscriptions with neat ink on top inside front cover page and on first blank front free endpaper page. Pages are clean, with light foxing to free endpaper pages and occasionally on few pages. All pages are tightly held at the gutter. Inner hinges are very good. The text and plates are clean and bright (Excellent Copy) (Please see pictures).
