Biography of Federico Molina Albero (Barcelona, 1905 - Bunyola, 1981)
A Catalan Gypsy painter who settled in Mallorca, initially in Valldemossa and later near the town of Bunyola (Buñola), where he was able to combine his two passions, horses and painting, on his estate with stables. Today, the site is a well-known riding club that bears his name. The artist, highly trained in drawing and an academic with a vigorous brushstroke, received great acclaim as a portraitist, and his figurative painting is considered among the great masters of Spanish portraiture. In 1968, he exhibited at the "Galerías Costa," run by José Costa, son of the formidable cartoonist and humorist of the same name, who became popular in Barcelona by contributing to the columns of "L'Esquella de la Torraixa" and other publications at the beginning of the century. From then on, his painting became more subtle and detailed. There are several anecdotes about nudes painted with the model present, which the artist later corrected by overpainting a scarf that covered her breasts. Nevertheless, the work lost much of its sensuality due to the pronounced neckline it revealed. These corrections have been discovered in more than one of his paintings by a restoration workshop in Palma. His themes of gypsies and motherhood are also noteworthy. He also produced a large number of still lifes with flowers.
