Biographical note on Reinier Snoy (ca. 1477–1537)
Reinier Snoy was born around 1477 in Gouda. In 1496, he enrolled at the University of Leuven and later in Bologna earned the degree of master in liberal arts and a doctorate in medicine. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he became the personal physician of Adolphe of Burgundy, lord of Beveren and Veere.
Around 1506, he settled again in Gouda, where he purchased a house on Lange Groenendaal. He was a member of the city council and held various administrative positions, including that of treasurer. He also served as the city's doctor and as the personal physician of the regular canons of Stein.
In 1513, he was sent as an ambassador of Charles V to James IV of Scotland and, in 1523, to Christian II of Denmark. He attended Erasmus of Rotterdam's humanist circle: we possess a letter of theirs preserved in the Corpus of Allen. Snoy also published in 1513 an Erasmus's Silva Carminum. He also had relations with Cornelius Aurelius, who dedicated some of his Latin works to him.
Although some of his ideas showed similarities to those of Martin Luther, Snoy published a pamphlet against Lutheran doctrine: Antilutherus. Dialogus super doctrina Lutherana de fide et operibus. His paraphrases of the Psalms (Psalterium Davidicum paraphrasibus brevibus illustratum, 1535) gained great popularity.
