Dramatically composed triptych by Utagawa Kokunimasa, a prominent Meiji artist known for war depictions (senso-e).
Depicted is a fiercely raging naval battle during the events around Port Arthur at the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War.
Starkly moving rain and wave lines, smoke clouds, and explosions create an impressive dynamism.
The subtle color palette in blue and gray tones with red accents highlights the drama of the battle.
A characteristic example of the Meiji military art and its visual propaganda.

In age-appropriate condition with signs of use. Creases, isolated small stains, and slight paper waviness; fold edges visible. The three pages have been glued together. Colors generally well preserved.
