Paesaggio fluviale con architetture e figure, oil on canvas, 17th century, Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Fine oil on large canvas depicting a broad landscape with a northern European aesthetic, featuring a fortified castle, stone bridge, watercourse, and figures in the foreground. The work belongs to the Italian tradition influenced by the bamboccianti painters and Flemish masters active in Rome in the second half of the Seventeenth Century: theatrical settings, dramatic lighting, dynamic skies, and storytelling entrusted to small figures at the edges of the scene.
The composition is built on a strong diagonal cut, with architecture and light that animate the sky and the wall surfaces. The stylistic features (an open sky with clouds, simplified figures, a 'Mannerist' taste, and an idealized setting) place the painting between the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Gilded antique wooden cornice, appropriate for the work.
Technique: oil on canvas
Period: late 17th – early 18th century
Dimensions:
5 ft 3 in L × 32 in H (without frame)
Provenance: Roman private collection
Attached document: an old handwritten note from the period with a description of the painting has been preserved.
Conditions:
Overall good condition, with slightly oxidized old varnish, uniform craquelure. No tears. The canvas is stable, with a uniform color and excellent decorative impact.
Shipping:
Professional packaging, tracked shipping.
In-person pickup by appointment possible.
