Description from the seller
Yoshitomo Nara - Do not Disturb (1996)
Work in excellent condition
The print was made on art paper.
Size: 30 x 24 cm
In Do Not Disturb, Yoshitomo Nara explores the theme of inner retreat and passive resistance through a childlike figure that is both gentle and provocative. The character, with simple features and a closed or diverted gaze, seems to send a clear message to the world: a refusal of interaction, a need for isolation and protection. True to his minimalist visual universe, Nara combines innocence with silent defiance, creating a tension between fragility and determination.
The title acts as a symbolic barrier – 'do not disturb' – reversing traditional power dynamics: it is the child who imposes their boundary on the viewer. Through clean lines, a muted palette, and a tone that is both tender and ironic, Nara evokes chosen solitude, emotional refuge, and the need to preserve one's mental space. The work becomes a meditation on inner peace and personal autonomy.
