【Product details】
This striking contemporary Mashiko ware vase by Jinnai Sakata combines traditional Japanese pottery with a bold sculptural presence. The piece features a dynamic stepped chevron surface, completely covered with hand-applied gold leaf that gives the form a rich, tactile shimmer. Beneath the gilded exterior, the body is fired using a high-temperature carbonisation technique, resulting in a deep black ceramic core that contrasts dramatically with the luminous gold. The interior remains black, enhancing the sense of depth when viewed from above.
Mashiko ware, produced in Tochigi Prefecture, is celebrated for its robust clay and expressive glazes. Sakata builds on this tradition while pushing it into contemporary art territory. Having studied under the influential potter Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and establishing his kiln in Mashiko in 1966, he has since explored black pottery in dialogue with materials such as paper, glass and lighting, exhibiting widely in Japan and abroad. This vase can be appreciated both as a container and as a sculptural object, making a powerful focal point in a modern interior.
The underside bears the artist’s mark. The piece comes with its original signed wooden storage box and a protective cloth.
Condition: Some blemishes and signs of use are present, and the gold leaf shows small scratches. There is a crack running from the side towards the base, and the vase will leak if filled with water, so it is best used with an inner container or enjoyed purely as a decorative object. Please refer to the photos for details.
