Description from the seller

Superb Royal Portrait of Prince William Duke of Glouchester ( 1689-1700) son of the later Queen Anne ( 1665-1714) of England, Scotland and Ireland and Prince consort, George of Denmark (1653-1708). This portrait hails from the studio of the celebrated court painter of German origin: Sir Godfrey Kneller 1646-1723. Another version ( oval) is in Erdigg Hall in Wales and is owned by the National Trust

Prince William was the much desired protestant heir of the British throne, viewed by contemporaries as the person who could prolong the Glorious Revolution. His uncle William of Orange and his aunt Mary had not produced offspring and all eyes were on Prince William to become the future King of Britain. Prince Willian was the 7th child of Princess Anne and all her six older children had died in childbirth or infancy. Prince William however was also not blest with a robust health and suffered as baby from convulsions possibly caused by meningitis. In his youth he showed a great liking for military maneuvers and operated a miniature army consisting of 90 boys that he would drill on the Palace grounds. His uncle King William the Third of Orange witnessed such a drill when Prince William was 7 years old and granted him the highest order of his realm: the order of the Garter, which was established in 1348 by King Edward the Third. On this portrait Prince William is painted wearing Armour and a brown hermeline trimmed cloak
His hair is styled in high baroque fashion. The painting dating from circa 1700 is placed in an original gilt baroque British frane. The painting is in excellent condition.
Provenance:
It comes from the estate of the Johannesburg socialite and fashion designer Margaret Read who in the 90-ties of the 20th century used to drive through Johannesburg in her Rolls Royce.
Seize of the canvas 74 x 60 cm, size of the frame 85 x 98 cm
The painting is painted in oil on canvas. The restorer put a protective sheet of material on the back which protect against moist
