Description from the seller
History of Theodosius the Great, for His Highness the Dauphin, by Monsieur Fléchier, Abbot of St. Severin, of the French Academy.
Dated edition of 1680 (M. DC. LXXX), printed by Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, King's Printer in Paris, with royal privilege dated March 9, 1679. Mentioned as 'New Edition'.
Historical context
This prestigious work was specially composed for the education of the Grand Dauphin, son of Louis XIV. Fléchier, a member of the French Academy, chose the figure of Emperor Theodosius I as a model of virtue and Christian governance to be transmitted to the future king of France. It is a unique testimony of royal pedagogy under the Ancien Régime.
