Bound copy in ochre half-leather, spine decorated with gold tooling and titled in gilt lettering. Covers and spine preserved.
In good condition despite the rubbed and epidermized back. Slightly cracked bite. Interior fresh and clean, free of rust spots, not trimmed.
Émile-Auguste Chartier, known as Alain, born on March 3, 1868, in Mortagne-au-Perche (Orne department), died on June 2, 1951, in Le Vésinet (Yvelines department), was a French essayist, journalist, teacher, and philosopher.
A secular and republican professor, who volunteered during the Great War, he emerged in the interwar period as an emblematic figure of left-wing pacifism (Mars ou la guerre jugée, 1921) and distinguished himself as an intellectual in the last decades of the Third Republic through a form of 'philosophical journalism,' notably through five thousand Propos published daily in the press (1906-1936). Rooted in the Cartesian tradition and a student of Jules Lagneau, his thought, critical and individualist in politics, is often described as 'rationalist'.
Signed; Alain
