Description from the seller
Item Description (English):
This is a beautifully detailed woodblock-style print by Masao Ido (井堂雅夫), titled "Heian-Jingu Shrine" (平安神宮) from the renowned Kyoto Hyakkei (京都百景) series, specifically part of the Rakutō Jikkei (洛東十景) subseries.
The artwork features the iconic giant torii gate leading to Heian Shrine in Kyoto, Japan.
Rendered in vivid colors and clean lines, this print captures the harmony between traditional architecture and nature, along with modern-day life, evident in the pedestrians and cars subtly integrated into the scene.
Masao Ido’s works are highly regarded for their calm and nostalgic portrayal of Japanese landscapes, blending traditional techniques with a contemporary atmosphere.
Artist's Comment:
Heian-Jingu Shrine
Heian Shrine was established to enshrine Emperor Kanmu as its deity, commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of the capital's relocation to Heian-kyo (Kyoto).
Its grounds feature a beautiful garden, and the crimson weeping cherry blossoms blooming in the West Garden in spring are indescribably beautiful.
I sketched from the red gable bridge over the canal.
I placed the large vermilion torii gate prominently in the foreground, depicting the Otenmon Gate of Heian Jingu in the distance.
This entire Okazaki area, home to numerous cultural facilities including museums, also serves as a spacious and relaxing place of respite for citizens.
I expressed the relaxed sense of scale through the contrast between the large torii gate and the human figures.
Size:
Approximately 36 cm × 26 cm
