Description from the seller
Exceptional binding by Jeanne Germaine Schrœder (1889-1983), the official binder for Jean Cocteau and Coco Chanel.
In 1925, its reputation earned it clients among great bibliophiles like Louis Barthou, and it became distinguished for its Art Deco bindings ('breaking with tradition, embracing modernity' according to an era's phrase), which were original and of high quality.
Full ebony morocco, covers decorated with a geometric design of blind-tooled fillets, ivory leather inlaid in the corners and center of the front cover, on which stands out a light fixture with the number 293. Mosaic piece on the spine with blind-tooled title running lengthwise. Binder's name embossed at the foot of the back pastedown. Matching slipcase.
Original edition, printed in small numbers, of this pastiche composed by Paul Reboux, imitating the famous oration of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet delivered in 1670 for Henriette Anne of England, Duchess of Orléans.
Text commented on by Father Beaumignon, professor of Belles Lettres at the Royal College of Aubervilliers.
Limited edition of only 400 copies on Holland paper, all signed by Paul Reboux, this is number 296, enriched with an autographed inscription signed by the author to the industrialist, bibliophile and collector Jacques André: "...to thank him for these two gifts where there is something to see and to eat, and to express my very cordial sympathy..."
Ex-libris with Pelican by J. André.
