Edition partly original. The first four volumes appeared in 1788 (in-12mo without engraved titles); three additional volumes were published in 1789 as supplements, containing letters.
Bindings in full blond calf, marbled for the period. Smooth spine adorned with small fleurons. Title pieces in red morocco and shelf-titles in green morocco. Spine damaged. Large wear on the upper board of volumes I and II, less pronounced in volume V. Losses at the upper joint at the head of volume III, on the upper board and along the lower joint. Losses at the tail of volume 7. Internally fresh, but 3 title pages with a brown band in the margin. Good copy.
Important biography by the philologist Thiebault de Lavaux, accompanied by anecdotes and supporting documents. The narrative is chronological. Volume I: 1712 to 1756. Volumes II: 1756 to 1763. Volume III: 1772 to 1785. Volume IV: private and literary life. Volumes V to VII consist of letters about Frederick II; each serves as additional pieces that bolster the biography.
