As Christianity expanded and became a popular religion, pilgrimages to Christian holy sites became fashionable among believers. A large number of pilgrims were inevitably drawn to the regions of Palestine, Asia Minor, and Syria, which contain numerous sites directly related to Jesus Christ, his mother, the Virgin Mary, the apostles, and other prominent Christian figures who lived in the early centuries of the religion. From distant lands, pilgrims tried to bring back something that would remind them of their journey and the great sacred places they had visited. Of course, the most ideal option was to acquire and carry a fragment of a holy relic. However, not everyone could obtain one. Therefore, a different and more accessible object was needed as proof that someone had visited that region of the Earth where everything breathes the memory of eminent times and Christian figures. A palm branch became a very popular object that pilgrims brought from distant lands.
