Half-title: The History of Don Quixote. [i-v], vi-xxviii, [1], 2-855, [856], [1*], 2-8* pp. Frontispiece. Illustrated. 30 x 24 cm. Brown cloth with gold and black lettering and decorations, impressed decoration on back cover.
This edition (the first in English to use Dore’s designs) based on Jarvis’ translation
with “occasional corrections” from Motteux, originally issued in parts, 1864-67, but
re-set for this version, with the full-page illustrations included in the pagination,
undated, but the publishers’ advertisements (pp.[1*], 2-8*) are coded “3-99”
[=March 1899?]. The latter are described as Cassell’s “Classified Price List”; they
omit this version of Don Quixote, but do include a Monthly Serial Publication (3d. per
month) and a Weekly Publication, both listed as “Doré Don Quixote”.
The illustrations comprise many in the text and 117 full-page (unnumbered)
illustrations plus the frontispiece, all signed by Doré and the engraver [Heliodore]
Pisan. The full-page illustrations are listed (with page numbers) at pp. xi-xiv.
