DESCRIPTION: I present for auction a beautiful 360-year-old book that contains, in a single large volume (24x18 cm) and weighing 1.4 kg, the famous 'Institutions of Justinian' or 'Imperial Institutions (Institutions of Emperor Justinian),' commented on by the renowned Dutch jurist and humanist Arnold Vinnius (1588–1657).

The 'Institutes' of Justinian are a set of books intended for the teaching of Roman Law, drafted by order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I between the years 529 and 534. They were written by law professors Theophilus and Dorotheus and supervised by the great Tribonian, forming part of the 'Corpus Iuris Civilis'.

Our edition is one of the finest ever produced, printed by Daniel Elzevir (1626-1680), a member of the legendary Dutch family of booksellers, publishers, and printers whose renowned prints are known as EDICIONES ELZEVIRIANAS. The popular Elzevirian editions are preserved in the best libraries in the world, and now you can have one in yours.

Entirely printed copy with the text in two columns and illustrated with beautiful initial letters, on the cover, the unmistakable printer's mark with which Daniel Elzevir signed all his prints, depicting the goddess Minerva alongside an olive tree.

CONDITION: Beautiful full leather binding with marbled leather in good condition, with some scuffs as shown in the photos. Spine with five raised bands, decorated with bright gold motifs inspired by plant designs, and the title of the work in magnificent gold lettering. Edges stained in red.

The interior is in very good condition, as shown in the photos. Some anecdotal handwritten notes. Cover in two inks, red and black. Entirely printed with the text in two columns and illustrated with beautiful initial letters and, on the cover, the unmistakable engraving or printer's mark with which the Elzevirs signed all their prints.
