Description from the seller
I present to you in an auction a very beautiful book with heraldic binding (Aux Armes), decorated on both covers with the impressive coat of arms of the city of Nimega (Netherlands) (in Dutch, Nijmegen). Above the coat of arms, we find the city's name in Latin: Noviomagum.
This magnificent book is an illustrated copy of the 'Commentaries on the Gallic War,' the crowning work of the famous Roman general and politician JULIUS CAESAR (100–44 BC), in which he masterfully and engagingly narrates the conquest of Gaul (present-day France and Belgium). Caesar is considered one of the great masters of the Latin language.
This wonderful edition is illustrated with 1 engraved portrait of Caesar, 1 engraved cover, 3 fold-out maps, 5 fold-out engravings, and 6 full-page engravings. IN TOTAL, 16 DELICIOUS ENGRAVINGS.
The engravings are as follows: a beautiful engraved portrait of Julius Caesar, a stunning engraved cover, three fantastic double-page maps (Hispania, Gaul, and the Roman Empire), a fold-out engraving of Julius Caesar's and Ariovistus's camps before the Battle of the Vosges (58 BC), a fold-out engraving of the bridge Caesar built over the Rhine River in 55 BC, an engraving of the Siege of Avaricum (52 BC), a remarkable engraving of the Siege of Alesia (52 BC) where Caesar defeated Vercingetorix, an engraving of the Siege of Uxelodunum (51 BC) with burning barrels rolling down the mountain to set fire to Caesar's assault towers, an engraving of the Siege of Marseille (49 BC) during the second civil war between Caesar and Pompey, a fold-out engraving of the Battle of Dyrrachium (48 BC) where Pompey defeated Caesar, a fold-out engraving of the city of Alexandria in 47 BC during the confrontation between Caesar's and Cleopatra's forces, an engraving of animals, and two engravings of military constructions.
In addition to the 'Commentaries on the Gallic War', our book includes another fascinating work: the 'Commentaries on the Civil War', in which Caesar describes his struggle for power against Pompey. It also includes our book the so-called 'Cesariano Corpus', which encompasses the Alexandria War, the African War, and the Spanish War. Finally, the book contains the Life of Julius Caesar, written by Julius Celsus.
In his works, Caesar, in addition to narrating the development of his campaigns and the daily aspects of the Roman army (tactics, weaponry, organization, etc.), provides ethnographic descriptions of the Celtic and Germanic peoples, including topics such as social and military organization, religion, and language, which to this day remain essential studies for experts in various fields.
