【Product details】
This is an Edo period Buddhist altar cabinet, or zushi, crafted in wood and finished with a deep black lacquer exterior. The interior is also mostly black lacquer, accented with decorative sections painted using lacquer mixed with gold powder, once used to enhance the sacred presence of the enshrined image. The cabinet features a domed roof and carved wooden fittings with floral motifs, giving it a dignified temple-like appearance.
Such cabinets were traditionally used to house Buddhist images, serving as protective enclosures while also elevating their ritual significance. Portable yet highly revered, zushi were central to devotional practices in homes and temples alike.
The piece shows the passage of time, with surface wear, scratches, grime, patina, lacquer cracks, discolouration, and areas of flaking. Three nails on the fittings are missing, and there are visible cracks in the wood. These signs of age add to the historical character of the cabinet. Please refer to the photographs for condition details.
