Geraldo Abraham Brender to Brandis
The Hague 1878 – 1971 Blaricum
Geraldo Abraham Brender à Brandis came from a well-off family. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam and then for another six months in his hometown of The Hague. Among his teachers were Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig, Antoon der Kinderen, and Jan Veth. After his studies, he lived for two years in Laren and eventually settled in a beautiful villa in Blaricum. He was a member of the Association of Visual Artists Laren-Blaricum, the Gooische Art Circle, and St. Lucas in Amsterdam. Additionally, the artist spent several summers in England, where he painted some landscapes and horses. He also visited the Italian region of Bolzano.
Brender à Brandis mainly painted still lifes in the Impressionist style. Besides being a painter, draftsman, and lithographer, he was also involved in designing book covers and worked as a goldsmith and sculptor. He personally taught the well-known painter-graphic artist Johan Briedé.
