Description from the seller
Minck Oosterveer was born on July 19, 1961, in Dordrecht. At the age of six, he created his first comic strip. He has always had a fondness for older American newspaper strips from the 1930s to the 1950s. His realistic style reveals influences from Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond, Will Eisner, and Alex Toth, all artists who did not require coloring to impress. For Minck, it was an old sore to see coloring in his work. He was rarely satisfied with it, until his very last publication shortly before his death, the first part of the Storm spin-off The Chronicles of the Outer Ring.
He worked in a classical drawing style, which means constructed from lines with shadow and hatching for detailing. His figures were drawn entirely from nature, without idealization. Of course, the main characters had a handsome appearance, and the noble knights were strong and the ladies slender, but their proportions were natural, unlike, for example, Alex Raymond, who used a more flowing form of idealization. The stories were not primarily about heroic sword fights but also dealt with the daily life of the main character.
Between 1996 and 2007, Minck Oosterveer created a daily adventure comic for De Telegraaf about beautiful, female detectives, initially Zodiak and later Nicky Saxx. He formed a close partnership with his regular scriptwriter Willem Ritstier. The duo also produced a new comic for the magazine Eppo: two parts of the western Ronson Inc. and the first part of The Chronicles of the Outer Ring, a spin-off of the popular series around Storm, the first part of which was published just before his death in bookstores.
His dreams were coming true one by one in that year, 2011: drawing an episode of the Spider-Man series for the renowned comic publisher Marvel, getting his own comic series in America, and working with French giants Olivier Vatine and Daniel Pecqueur. None of it would come to pass anymore. The French themselves called him. 'I fell off my chair,' said Minck Oosterveer.
In the Dutch comic world, it was a long time, many years, difficult to get a break, but internationally, Minck Oosterveer was thriving in the last years of his life. Earlier in 2011, he received the Stripschapprijs as recognition for his entire body of work. Minck Oosterveer was praised for his realistic style, which he was one of the few in the Netherlands still employing.
Minck Oosterveer was strongly influenced by the famous American comic artists Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond, and Will Eisner, and he developed his own style based on their examples, in which his line work was unique. It was just a matter of time before the deal with the American comic publisher Dynamite Entertainment was finalized: he was going to draw the comic ‘The Shadow’ for them. Unfortunately, time caught up with Minck……..
In 2008, Minck Oosterveer debuted in the US with a zombie comic strip, and a year later, he began collaborating with the famous screenwriter Mark Waid, which resulted in two parts of The Unknown. In January, an American agent approached Oosterveer, wanting to represent him, and this agent arranged for Minck Oosterveer to visit the giants DC Comics and Marvel in June. Oosterveer did not hide his happiness about this. At Marvel, they wanted to assign him to Black Panther, and at DC, to Batman. But it didn't happen that quickly in America. 'Oh,' thought and hoped Minck, 'I'm now in the picture, and that will come in time. We'll stay in touch.' Meanwhile, Minck Oosterveer was eager to start on 'The Shadow.' 'Only my fee per page still needs to be agreed upon,' he told NRC, grinning from ear to ear with happiness.
There is a lot to find about Minck on the internet. Comic journalist Michael Minneboo wrote, among other things, in 2011 on his blog about Minck: 'Not long ago, he was still happily talking about the tour he made along American publishers. For Minck, the great adventure had just begun. Also at Stripfestival Breda this year, a long line of fans was waiting to get a drawing from Minck.
In his free time, Minck often rode his motorcycle. During his last ride on September 17, 2011, he was involved in an accident. It is suspected that another vehicle was involved in the incident. The investigation is still ongoing, but the outcome remains the same: Minck Oosterveer was only 50 years old.
