Guinguette sur les bords de Seine, oil on canvas, 1910–1920, France, by Paul de Castro (1882–1940).
Description from the seller
Paul de CASTRO (1882-1940)
Guinguette on the banks of the Seine
Oil on canvas (round format)
Signed at the bottom left.
Signed twice on the back on the chassis: 'P de Castro'.
Old PLM transport labels and numbers.
Beautiful work in the original format by the French painter Paul de Castro, depicting the terrace of a guinguette or a restaurant on the banks of the Seine, very likely in the vicinity of Rouen or Honfleur, where the artist enjoyed painting bucolic scenes.
The artist plays with the play of light and color contrasts between the foreground and the background. The latter, with the soft colors of a early morning, shows us a view of the river lively with two steamships.
A student of Fernand Cormon and Eugène Thirion at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, Paul de Castro exhibits at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and the Salon d'Automne, showcasing landscapes of Rouen, Honfleur, Provence, and Italy, as well as views of streets in Paris and interior scenes, notably from the Palace of Versailles.
From 1907 to 1932, Paul de Castro regularly exhibited at the Galerie Parisienne alongside other artists such as Auguste Chabaud, Lucien Simon, and André Roberty.
Of Italian origin, Paul de Castro is naturalized French. He has been named a knight of the Legion of Honour.
His works are now housed in many museums in France: at the Musée Calvet in Avignon, the Musée des beaux-arts in La Rochelle, the Petit Palais, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris; and abroad: the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Dimensions: Diameter of 66.5 cm, without frame.
