In his unmistakable, expressive style, Peter Robert Keil creates a powerful symbiosis of human and animal with 'Birdman'. The surreal merged forms, dominant color fields, and black contouring give the work an energetic tension. The bird, as a symbol of freedom, meets the human face – a metaphor for longing, transformation, and duality.
A work that fascinates and invites interpretation.
The composition exudes joy of life, directness, and artistic immediacy – a tribute to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically talented mother struggled through the final phase of the war with her son to West Berlin, where the two settled after the war. There, Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon developed an interest in painting—particularly in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, originally from East Berlin, became his mentor around 1954 and taught him initial craft skills and painting techniques.
