Jan van Oort (1921 - 2006) designed the comic character Paulus the Boskabouter during World War II, whose adventures have been published in Het Vrije Volk since 1946. Van Oort called himself 'Jean Dulieu' (the French translation of 'Jan van Oort').
Besides 8,000 newspaper publications, Paulus appeared in color in numerous magazines and children's books (published in translation in many countries). The watercolors Dulieu created for this purpose are each and every one a small work of art.

Dulieu was a jack of all trades, a versatile and virtuoso artist whose skill and talent kept pace with his pursuit of perfection. Jean Dulieu received many awards for his work and is considered part of the "Big Three": Marten Toonder, Hans G. Kresse, and Jean Dulieu.
