L.J. Kleijn (1817-1897) - Winterlandschap met bakslede

A winter scene in the late afternoon. Skaters and a bak sled are still making their way home before dark. The painting is in good condition and equipped with a museale Flippo frame. On the back of the panel (20 x 31 cm), the sticker from Kunsthandel J.A.C. van Gotum can still be seen, which was then based in Breda.

Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn painted both summer and winter landscapes. In all his landscapes, water plays a leading role. Kleijn preferred compositions with a low horizon and a strong diagonal. In the foreground, there is space for the pure landscape, while in the distance, there is room for the (emerging) city. Works by L.J. Kleijn can be found in museums in Amsterdam, The Hague, Arnhem, and Cape Town.

Dutch artists, including Kleijn, chose the works of their famous predecessors from the Golden Seventeenth Century as examples and/or sources of inspiration. The romantics composed their own painting style in their studio, but sometimes also outside of it, in which city, countryside, sky, and water played leading roles.
