Charming Breton Marine by Maurice Proust
Very beautiful oil on panel signed by Maurice Proust, a referenced painter (1867-1944).
This early 20th-century painting depicts a maritime scene at dusk.
It is painted from the shore, with a sailing boat on the left. On the right, a city where the bell tower and houses are visible.
The talented Maurice Proust, whose signature appears in the bottom right of the painting, regularly painted Brittany. According to regional experts, this work could be located in the Lorient, Larmor, or Gulf of Morbihan area. Maurice Proust also frequently painted the Bay of La Baule and the mouth of the Loire estuary, or Le Croisic.
Chiaroscuro, between a luminous sky at the center and a black cloud, is beautifully depicted and illustrates the qualities of the painter. Former assistant set designer for the French State theaters, notably the Comédie-Française, Proust later made his mark on art history by working for the major Parisian houses. He created memorable decorative compositions for the Palais du Costume at the Universal Exposition.
This very beautiful painting on panel is carefully framed in a wooden frame with a gilded, beveled central baguette. It is ready to be hung in your living room.
The frame measures 50.7 cm wide by 38.5 cm high. The painting measures 38.5 cm wide by 19 cm high.
