Description from the seller

Original edition of this mythical novel by Pierre Louÿs.
Numbered copy one of the 550 copies on alfa (no. 559).
Complete frontispiece of Goya's 'Pantin' in heliogravure.

Well-bound with the cover and margins preserved, in a luxurious half-morocco binding of deep green with corner pieces, gilded fillets along the covers and corners, a rounded spine decorated with a fine Art Nouveau-style design composed of gilded fillets, a red morocco title piece, and gilded initials, a lovely gilded iron featuring a flower with petals mosaic in red leather. Gilt head.

In good condition despite the leather rubbed on the spine, cuts, and corners. Unsoiled spine. Interior clean and fresh, with some foxing spots on the guards. Very nice copy, bound in a well-made binding.

La Femme et le Pantin by Pierre Louÿs is not only an illustration of the slavery of passion. It is also a story whose mastery of language, dramatic effectiveness, and emotional power keep the reader alert from start to finish — a novel where tumult resonates from page to page.
Apart from the numerous illustrated and luxury editions, this text is known to the general public through three famous film adaptations: Josef von Sternberg's with Marlene Dietrich, Julien Duvivier's with Brigitte Bardot, and Luis Buñuel's with Carole Bouquet and Ángela Molina.
Summary: During the Seville carnival, André Stévenol encounters a young Andalusian woman, exchanges a quick promising sign with her, and immediately seeks to see her again. But he learns little more than her first name. He then inquires with his friend Don Mateo, who startles at the mention of Concha, and decides, in order to warn him, to tell him the story of his painful adventure with the young woman whom he was a puppet of.
