Jules Faehnlein, 19th century, oil painting titled Rue de l'Apport à Dinan, France, 61 × 53 cm with frame in a Louis XVI gold wooden frame, signed lower right.
Description from the seller
FAEHNLEIN Jules (19th-20th centuries)
Street of the Contribution in Dinan
Oil on canvas
Signed at the bottom right
Beautiful work by the Strasbourg-born painter Jules Faehnlein depicting a rare view of the historic center of Dinan, specifically of the Rue de l'Apport or Rue des Cordeliers.
We can locate this street thanks to the advertising sign on the wall of the house on the right, 'DAVY Chapelier.'
The Rue des Cordelier or de l'Apport suffered a serious accidental fire on February 3 and 4, 1907, destroying five houses with porches. Nevertheless, the first two houses with porches visible in the artwork are still visible today in Dinan.
Our work is a beautiful and rare testimony of the animation in the historic center of Dinan in the early 20th century.
A student of Jean-Jacques Henner and Jean-Léon Gérôme, Jules Faehnlein worked in Paris and exhibited at the Salon of the French Artists between 1895 and 1912.
In 1898, he received an honorable mention. He specialized in portraits and interior scenes: Portrait of a woman, Portrait of the author, Portrait of Mr. H. Letocart, Corner of a workshop, Interior in Haute-Savoie.
At the 1908 Salon in Toulouse, the painter exhibited several views of Dinan.
Note: An old minor restoration, with no impact, is visible on the back of the canvas.
Dimensions: 46.5 x 38.5 cm without frame and 61 x 53 cm with its gold-colored wooden frame in Louis XVI style.
