Vertumno e Pomona, an oil on canvas from the 17th century Netherlands, attributed to a follower of Willem van Mieris.
Description from the seller
This fascinating oil on canvas painting, created by a follower of Willem van Mieris (1662-1747), depicts the mythological subject of Vertumnus and Pomona.
The scene captures the moment when the god Vertumnus, assuming human form, approaches the nymph Pomona to persuade her of his love, an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
The background features a deep red velvet curtain or drape on the left, framing the scene, while on the right it opens up to a wooded twilight landscape, with a hint of architecture in the distance.
The work fits within the Dutch genre and mythological painting of the period, showing the influence of the Leiden School. The attention to detail, especially in the figures and in the still life of fruit and flowers, as well as the rendering of drapery, recall the refined and polished style typical of Willem van Mieris and his circle.
The painting is sold without a frame. It has an old backing with protective lining on the sides and shows signs of age consistent with the period, including old restorations.
Measures 40x48cm
