Description of the work

The work depicts a view of the famous Traversa San Leonardo in Florence, one of the most picturesque streets connecting the San Leonardo hill to the city center, characterized by ancient walls, steep climbs, lush vegetation, and a typically Florentine atmosphere.
Monsagrati interprets the scene with quick and bold touches, rich impastos, and a warm palette, emphasizing the light contrasts of the alley and the intense green of the overhanging trees. The composition is enveloping and guides the viewer's eye toward the background light.

Alessandro Monsagrati was born in Rome in 1884. Descended from a family of artists, he studied in the capital and perfected his skills in Florence, where he lived and worked for a long time, as a student of Ruggero Panerai and Antonio Falda. His paintings, including various Italian views (Venice, Florence, Rome, etc.), landscape scenes, still lifes, and portraits, bear a strong personal mark that reveals his temperament as a material colorist.
Monsagrati developed a language that combines elements of realism with a luminous and atmospheric sensitivity close to impressionism, while maintaining a traditional compositional structure. His dense and coloristic brushstrokes tend to give chromatic emphasis to the pictorial matter, with a vibrant rendering of light and shadow tones.
A distinctive feature of his works is the pursuit of balance between architectural description and atmosphere rendering: alleys, streets, and urban arches are often protagonists, illuminated by warm lights that suggest well-defined times of day (usually morning or afternoon).
He has exhibited in major Italian cities with solo and group exhibitions; his works are part of many public and private collections in Italy and abroad.
