On the theme of his bedroom, Van Gogh created three nearly identical paintings. The first, housed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, was painted in October 1888 and damaged during a flood while the artist was hospitalized in Arles. About a year later, Van Gogh made two copies: one, of the same dimensions, is now in the Art Institute of Chicago; the other, the version held by the Musée d'Orsay, was made for his family in the Netherlands and is smaller in size.
In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent explains what inspired him to paint such a work: he wanted to express tranquility and highlight the simplicity of his bedroom through the symbolism of color. To this end, he described: “the walls a pale lilac, the floor a faded, worn red, the chairs and the bed chrome yellow, the pillows and the sheet a very pale lime green, the blanket blood red, the washstand orange, the basin blue, the window green.” He achieved a certain purity through a composition made almost entirely of straight lines, and through a strict combination of colored surfaces that compensates for the instability of the perspective.
