Between 1899 and 1901, Monet created nearly a hundred views of the Thames River in London. He painted Waterloo Bridge and Charing Cross Bridge from his room in the Savoy Hotel, and the Houses of Parliament from Saint Thomas’s Hospital across the river. Monet’s London paintings are characterized by variations in light and atmosphere, heavily influenced by the famous London fog that often enveloped the city, especially in autumn and winter. His brushstrokes are systematically broken into thousands of colored patches to capture the density of the atmosphere and mist.
