"The Empire of Light" (in french: "L'Empire des Lumières") is the title of a succession of paintings by René Magritte. They depict the paradoxical image of a nocturnal landscape beneath a sunlit sky. he explored this very theme in 27 paintings (17 oil paintings and 10 gouaches) from the 1940s to the 1960s. The paintings are exhibited at the guggenheim and at the moma in new york, at the Guggenheim in venice as well as at the musées royaux des Beaux-Arts in Belgium. The last painting of that series to be sold at auction fetched the record price of 71,5m€ at Sotheby's in London. Tito hi-rnd technology revealed to the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts of Belgium that Magritte had used 15 different shades of black in this very painting.
