Artistic description:
This painting depicts an intimate and lively genre scene set in a dense woodland. Several characters, likely travelers or nomadic families, are gathered around a campfire. A woman prepares a meal while holding a child, an old man stands in the background, leaning on his staff, while other figures – a seated man, children, and a partially visible donkey – occupy the space harmoniously.
The composition is centered on the fire's light, which illuminates the faces and creates rich contrasts with the darkness of the forest. The painterly texture is lively and energetic, with accentuated touches characteristic of romantic or realist plein air painting.

Stylistic analysis
The style evokes the tradition of rustic scenes from the 19th century, influenced by the Belgian school but also by certain Dutch painters specialized in village or forest scenes. The treatment of light, dark and earthy colors, as well as the presence of numerous narrative details (utensils, fire, expressive attitudes), recall the influence of masters like Henri Leys, Eugène Verboeckhoven, or even the followers of David Teniers in their late period.
